Conquer The Canyon Trail Descriptions

Conquer The Canyon offers a wide range of trails for your Grand Canyon adventure. While each trail offers differing views and varying degrees of difficulty, all provide an exciting adventure in Grand Canyon National Park.

Your Conquer The Canyon Adventure begins at home! Wherever you live, whatever you do, whenever you can, begin training and preparing for your Grand Canyon adventure as soon as you receive the 16-week schedule and information from us.

Unless you are an experienced hiker that has hiked Grand Canyon in the last 6 months, you will find that it is a very unique hike, and unlike anything else you have ever done before. The first thing to understand is that hiking Grand Canyon is a very unusual and unique thing to do. Of the over 5,000,000 annual visitors to the park, less than 1% of them ever set foot on one of its trails. Even fewer do so with a trained professional Grand Canyon expert guide.

The second thing you will learn is that the environment is very different than what you are used to. Many of you live in or near mountains and have experienced the thin air of higher elevations. Many of you have lived in warm climates with oppressive summer heat. And some of you may live in arid tundra environs where the humidity is very low. Probably NONE of you live where all three of these conditions exist on a consistent basis.

During your hike, you will begin at the rim of the Grand Canyon which is approximately 7000' (2134 meters in elevation). Here, the air is thin. The air temperature inside the canyon will exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity level could be as low as 5% or 6%. That means that even though you are being active, you won't think you are sweating...YOU ARE! It is just evaporating before it dampens your clothes.

For those of you who choose to hike into the Canyon, in addition to the conditions listed above, there is one more factor to consider. It is simply that you will be hiking the last mile or so where the trail is the steepest and most difficult! And, it comes at a time when you are the most exhausted, your body is nearly depleted of energy resources and you have the highest internal core temperature of day.

So as you read through these trail overviews, keep two things in mind. One...there are NO EASY trails into or out of Grand Canyon. Two...what goes down, must come up, under your own power. Please chose your hike wisely and prepare yourself accordingly.

These trail descriptions are basic overviews of the trails we will use. Many more details will be available along with the training techniques you will need to learn so that your adventure is not only an enjoyable one, but one you will want to repeat year after year.

Hike Day - Trail Descriptions - A Day of Options

As you look at the trail descriptions, remember, the trail you will ultimately select is the hike that will be best suited to you and your interests after you have successfully completed your training and preparedness program. By then you'll be better prepared for the rigors of the Grand Canyon than you are today, and you will spend your day under the guidance of very capable expert Walking Connection Grand Canyon guides.

On this day we plan for you to spend the entire day at Grand Canyon National Park. Though your actual hiking times will vary, typically the hikers spend 7 - 9 hours in the park. Of course, we do have options that can shorten or lengthen the amount of time you spend hiking, distances you will cover, elevation changes you'll experience and technical challenges you will endure. The Choice Is Yours!

Walk, Hike or Roll!

Each team will be as small as 6 hikers and no larger than 13 hikers. Each team will be led by one Walking Connection Grand Canyon Expert Interpretive Guide for every 6-7 hikers.

On The Rim...

This trail offers excellent walking for quiet views of the inner canyon and for visitors who desire a hike without steep inclines and descents. There is a shuttle bus that runs parallel to the trail so you can customize the distance of your hike to meet your needs, from 1.5 miles to 12 miles (2.4 to 19.3 kilometers). This trail also provides for up to 6.2 miles (10 Kilometes) of wheelchair accessible trails.

This hike is for you if...

...you are a person who enjoys hiking for a full day but prefers to do so at a more relaxed pace. If you have not spent much time in the mountains or on steep, rugged trails, are unsure of your sense of heights, but are keen to explore and stretch your limits “a little,” while with an experienced guide or if you do not consider yourself very sure-footed in rough terrain and are more interested in learning about the environment, geology, fauna and flora – this hike is for you.

A Wilderness Trail

This wilderness trail is one of the most difficult trails at Grand Canyon. It is a steep hike into and out of the canyon on an unmaintained trail that is rocky, narrow and offers long stretches of very steep inclines. It is the most technically challenging of our hikes. We will offer two options on the hike that offer a total distance of 5-7 miles. (8 - 11.2 Kilometers). In personal mileage, it will feel more like a 10 - 14 mile strenuous hike.

This hike is for you if...

...you are a person who is very active and enjoys strenuous hiking on rugged surfaces at a moderate pace. You have prepared yourself with the skills necessary for a more technical experience. If you have spent a lot of time in the mountains and do not have any problems with heights, hiking up long and steep inclines, if you are surefooted and enjoy walking rugged, narrow trails, are interested in learning some about the environment, geology, fauna and flora and are in great physical condition – this is the hike for you.

A Corridor Trail Hike

This corridor trail hike is a steep hike into and out of the canyon. It offers day hikes that range in distance up to 12 miles (19.3 Kilometers) round trip. It is the most popular trail into Grand Canyon. This trail offers sweeping views of both the Canyon and what lies ahead of you with each step you take. It is a wide and well maintained trail that is shared with mule trains and is the longest of our hikes.

This hike is for you if...

...you are a person who is very active and enjoys strenuous, a bit faster paced hiking and the person who prepared themselves with high endurance training, strong determination and physical abilities to cover long distances. If you have spent a lot of time in the mountains and do not have any problems with heights, hiking up long and steep inclines, are interested in a long (full) day of hiking and are interested in learning some about the environment, geology, fauna and flora and are in good physical condition – this is the hike for you.
